Birkin was married from 1965 until 1968 to John Barry, an English composer who wrote the musical score to the Jame Bond movies. Their got one daughter, the photographer Kate Barry. Probably most know for her passionate and creative relationship with her mentor Serge Gaionsbourg — they met on the set of Slogan in 68, and the year after they released the duet "Je t'aime...moi non plus". It was the first U.K. number one to be banned on national radio and is still the sexiest single ever made They separated in 1980. Their daughter is actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.In 1982 she gave birth to her third daughter, Lou Doillon, from her relationship with the director Jaques Doillon.
She also has the famous Birkin bag named after her.
